Lionel Messi will miss Argentina's upcoming match against Peru due to a thigh injury sustained during their game against Chile. Despite the injury, Messi completed the match, leading Argentina to a 1-0 victory. According to Goal.com, Messi revealed in a post-game interview, "I felt some discomfort in my right hamstring at the beginning of the game. It was tight and not as loose as it should've been. But I was able to finish the game. We'll see how it goes. In the first play, my adductor got hard. I didn't feel a puncture or a tear, but I did find it difficult to move freely." Messi will rest for the next match to assess the injury further.
The use of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound could have provided an immediate evaluation on the field. This technology offers rapid answers to the medical team regarding whether a player should be substituted or can continue without risking further injury. It is crucial to determine if the injury is a simple strain or involves a muscle fiber tear. While the immediate cause is likely an adductor injury, real-time visualization of the adductor longus, brevis, and magnus muscles would have enhanced the decision-making process on-site. Examining the tendon portion of the adductor longus for potential tears is also beneficial. The rehabilitation and recovery timeline differs from simple muscle strain to various muscle or tendon tear grades.
